Serious Games

Virtual Knee Surgery is a serious health game developed by Edheads and COSi, and it is what the title says. Edheads is a non-profit organisation, which creates 'unique, educational web experiences' for anyone to use. Even though there is not a whole lot of selection of games to play, you do get a feel of learning something as you play the games, which proves they are good as they seem.

This is one of few games that are on the website shown above. The player takes on the role of a surgeon and has to perform a total knee replacement operation. This is done through easy steps and there is only the right way to do things, you cannot accidently do something wrong to the patient, because it doesn't allow it, thus making it quite simple.

The game itself doesn't have realistic graphics, so it is not gory, instead, the graphics are of a cartoon style. There are different tools to use, like a mallet and a bone saw, which can be chosen when the time is right. Through the game there are often questions that are asked, in which the player has to choose a correct answer from a list provided, it doesn't matter if it is answered incorrectly, as the game still carries on. As this is an educational game it mainly focuses on explanations of the surgery proccess, but in simple terms that are easy to understand, whith sometimes labels pointing to certain parts of the knee and a description being told.

Apart from the game there are also some actual real life photographs of a knee operation, so you can choose whether or not to view them. This feature would be useful for people wanting to look further into the detail of the operation.

There is also a similar game to this, which is called 'Virtual Hip Surgery', in which you also get taken through stages and learn as you play. There are other games on the site that not only deal with health, for example, 'The Odd Machine' is a game that lets you learn about forces as you play.

From looking at several serious games, this one in particuler, they can be entertaining to play, but also educational at the same time. They can appeal to all different types of people, whether they are young or old, it depends on how the game is created for the audience.

What I have done so for on my car. I've got quite a few more things to do on it, but so far it seems okay.
